I hate to bump down my peony pictures, but I just have to share this.
My mother called me 90 minutes ago completely convinced we were about to be wiped off the face of the earth because a tornado was heading our way. What was mother's source of said death order? Freaking CNN!
Now, I spent a DECADE in TV news. I worked through blizzards, tornadoes, floods, hail, pestilence, locusts, dogs and cats living together, hurricane force winds, etc... I know where to get my LOCAL WEATHER COVERAGE, and it ISN'T FREAKING CNN!!! Some of my best friends are METEOROLOGISTS. I'm going to turn to them for weather coverage and not to some mo-mo's in Atlanta who don't know MILWAUKEE from PEWAUKEE or even WAUKEE (IOWA... shout out to Mike and Jen!), Summerfest from State Fair, who have never heard of the Hoan Bridge and don't even know who Solomon Juneau was.
I love my mother. I know she was genuinely concerned about my safety. But get a grip woman!!!! You daughter, the one with the Master of Arts in Communications, who has been nominated for an Emmy for breaking news coverage, and who can still find news faster than the average reporter is going to be just fine.
(The previous message is not meant to demean my mom. I typed this with a smile on my face and in my heart.)

Gotta love moms! They never stop worrying about us:) Hey, thanks for stopping by today, and good luck painting in your bathroom, take pictures, I bet it will look great.
Any time there is news that starts "and just outside of Toronto" my mother assumes it is in my little town.
Love them, but please...
great post as always
Why is it the older you get the more paranoid you become? Just a little thought to ponder...at 41 I find myself doing the same thing with my kids! Please somebody stop this madness, I think it's an epidemic, LOL!
I'm an earthquake girl myself (California) and know absolutely nothing about the Midwest's natural disaster's. I heard the CNN reports and was just wondering...ARE YOU GONNA BE OKAY?! J.K.
Enjoyed your post and will be back to read more tomorrow!
Cute story! I also grew up in Indiana, (about 130 E of Chicago). And I never understood when far-away relatives called and asked if we "made it through" the tornadoes. I was always like "uh - duh! Yes, we're fine, since the tornadoes were about 90 miles SOUTH of here!" Way to go CNN! Stupid Plebs!
That is so funny! My mother in law freaks out if there is a tornado in America too - she thinks it's bound to devastate inland England on it's destructive tour!
Have you ever noticed that the older moms get the more worried they become?! At least my mom does. Drives me batty!
My mum phoned me from Australia one time to ask if we okay as the news had shown that the West Country in the UK was flooding. A lot. I had to reassure her and explain that we lived on a hill and if we were flooded then Southampton (where the floods were) was now under nearly 800 feet of water!
Yep, that's what Mom's do.
On another note, can I just say that I HATE how the news makes every storm into such a big deal...with the alert scrolling at the bottom of the tv screen. I live on the east coast and we never get tornadoes...yet the news people make so many storms into tornado warnings or watches! It freaks my kids out!!
Ah yes, my mom is the same way! (Actually, both of my parents are like this. Oh, and my one sister, too....) Unfortunately, in my case, they get their info from Fox News almost exclusively, with a couple of dashes of The Weather Channel thrown in for national forecast effect.
Cheers!
Too funny, although I probably would have hunkered in the basement after posting this just in case the universe had a funny sense of humor... :)
There has been a long running argument between me and my husband.... he swears by the stupid Weather Channel but I know the local news is the only place to get the weather... especially in New England where the weather changes every 5 minutes... Of course I'm always right...
How funny. I know I'll be the same way with my kids, 'cause I can just see an ambulance and start saying a prayer that things are safe at school. Which may be way across town from said ambulance. ;)
LOL at your mother! If that had been my mother, she would have been on the phone with me, telling me what to do, and then calling up CNN and telling them how to do their job better.
aww. that's too cute...my mother-in-law is on that 'protective' side also.
Having lived through a tornado that destroyed our house, with my parents still in it, my mom is super-paranoid about storms. And so are my kids. We spent half our tornado season spring in our basement, with my 10 year old saying prayers to my 3 year old while laying under a counter. Panic and drama...it cracks me up. I mean, really, what are you gonna do about a tornado heading your way? Hide in the basement and pray, like we already do.
My mom isn't really like that, but my dad is. And it doesn't help that his favorite topic of conversation is the weather. You can't get 4 sentences into a phone call with him without him saying, "So, what's the weather been like there?" Which was funny when we lived in Hawaii. "Still sunny and 85 degrees, Dad. Just like last week and the one before that." Happy SITSday!
CNN is the downfall of many people. Tell her to step away from the TV. Gotta love Moms though, mine can always find the bad in any situation.
LOL! I lived in Indiana for quite a while (IU alum!) so I hear ya. Moms...what would you do without them?! :)
Congrats on your SITS day. My mother is the same way. Thank goodness she doesn't have a computer because if she had access to search engines we'd have a looming catastrophe on our hands everyday.
Happy SITS Day! My brother and I have both spent several years overseas and found ourselves in some less than stable areas. We've marveled at the media's ability to find six people shouting protests, make a coup out of it, and serve it up to our parents on prime time.
Day time cable news is out of control. When there's no "real" news to focus on they spin something up to make it seem like real news. I wish a tornado would wipe out those guys that are always being chased by the cops and going about 10 miles an hour during the chase (and CNN thinks this is big news).
See being military my whole life I have watched our extended family members freak out about EVERY CNN report. It is to the point that I refuse to watch CNN.
I don't care much for CNN!
ur never too old 4 ur mom to freak out!!! lol
Congratulations on your SITS day!
I gave up on CNN myself. It's like overprocessed food or something.
So in the future, CNN is not the go to source for weather? j/k
Cute story! I could see my mom doing the exact same thing. Anytime something happens in my county, my mom assumes that it's next door. It's a big county, mom!
The flip side of this is calling your mom to let her know you're okay after the hurricaine and she has NO IDEA that you were even hit by a hurricaine!!
Happy SITS day; bask in your comment love!!
OK, since you are in-the-know, I refuse to mention that I once had a lingering crush/almost-date with a current Weather Channel meteorologist. But it was when he worked for the local affiliate in my hometown. That's all I'm saying. He does usually get the weather correct, though--even from Atlanta!
Once a mom, always a mom. Enjoy your SITS day!
At least it was CNN and not FoxNews! LOL
Mothers. Gotta love em!
Congratulations on your SITS featured blogger of the day.
I hail from Wisconsin and have lived in Milwaukee. My sister lives in Wauwatosa and my mom and brother live in Waukesha.
I miss the midwest a lot!
I don't know, the local weather coverage around here is pretty bad. I might be better off trusting CNN. Everytime we get a storm and I'm watching the coverage, the people clearly don't know how to work/read the fancy-dancy equipment they have. I'm from Kansas; I know how to read a radar.
Ugh, I don't like CNN. I always get freaked out phone calls from family members.
Congrats on your nominations!
That is funny. I think I have received that same call, but from my dad. He lives to watch the weather, anytime, anywhere, from any news station. Ha ha. Congrats on you Saucy Blogness, today.
Your Mom is so much like my mom! Or aren't they all the same? It's dreadful but someday we'll be like them. That is just freaky isn't it? :) Moms you just gotta love them! Btw, congrats for being the FB today. Also, here's a big *applaud* for your nomination. You're one heck of a woman! *salute*
i must admit that i sometimes do this to my husband. we live in a very small (midwestern) town, so when the sirens go off, i always call to make sure he's okay! lol! why do we do this to ourselves?
At least you know she loves you. And maybe that was just her excuse to get to hear your voice one more time that day.... Note that I say "one more time."
Congrats on being featured today. I guess this is your 2nd Emmy nomination!
Not to worry; I get all my sports updates by watching the local weather channel!
To funny. My MIL is like that. When ever there is a car accident any where near where we live she will call us to make sure we are all ok. You just gotta love her.
My grandmother freaks out... My Mom, not so much. Aggghhh....
That is funny!!! You go girl. And I agree who gets their weather info from CNN, sometimes those people just talk to hear their own voices. :-)
By the way, HAPPY SITS DAY!!!
Congrats on being featured today! :)
Your mom sounds pretty funny. Congrats on the Emmy nomination, that's pretty cool. :o)
That is so freaking funny. I have friends like that. With family, we're pretty much "meh, she's my contact so if something bad happens someone will let me know" so I never did get it.
No matter where you live there is some type of weather drama or other.
Congrats on your emmy nomination and getting started on your book!
HAPPY SITS DAY!!
Sounds like a concerned mother. LOL glad you guys are alright.

See, my mom would have called me the next day... "Oh, last night I saw on CNN that there was a tornado coming your way... so I guess you're ok" :)
happy SITS day!
hahaha! My mom has done the same thing... but it goes for most anything in the state of Texas happening in my backyard!
Haha, to funny! Last time I was in NC they had the sirens and things going off for a storm warning and I was scared to death... then everyone was walking around all normal and told me that happens just about every time it storms. Oops!
"MILWAUKEE from PEWAUKEE or even WAUKEE"
I might as well be with CNN because I'm familiar with NONE of these places.
:-)
LOL! My Mother likes to get her news from People Magazine.
*sigh* I have to admit....if I saw something headed for my child I'd call too....even if I saw it on CNN.
You know that's gonna be you some day.
Do you ever wonder when it is that we start losing our sensibilities. My parents amaze me sometimes when they do things like that. Then I wonder if I'm gonna do it! Funny post.
When I was in college and interned in the news department at the local NBC affiliate, my then boyfriend, now husband, would call me all the time with news updates. When I was sitting in the news department reading news feeds. I always thought that was hilarious. But I guess if you think you've got a scoop, you've just got to share it with the ones you love!
Congrats on the SITS feature! I love the comment from Hot Tub Lizzy...we do all turn into our mothers don't we?
It's the first tornado season we are experiencing and I have to admit, I had to google "tornado what to do". But this is our first, so I've got an alibi.
As for your mom... maybe it's the ageing... :)
I don't notice stormy weather until it's happening. "Um, maybe we should take cover" when the tornado sirens are going off!
My SIL does this to us all the time. I guess she thinks we don't watch the weather or something.
Congrats on your SITS feature!
I KNOW!!! I can't tell you how many times my family has called, certain we were in mortal peril, only to find out the tornadoes were hundreds of miles away from our actual location.
Dear 'ole moms, they never stop worrying about their babies :)
My Dad is like this. The Weather Channel has a permanent live feed into my parents living room. He'll call my brother & I (who live 10 hours apart) when there's any hint of rain in our areas. It's cute, but also rather annoying. :-)
You wait till your babies are all grown up and living away from home. you'll be doing the same thing, believe me!! :-)
On the other side of the coin, I have received phonecalls in the early hours of the morning, because one of my kids in NZ, has seen an earthquake or a fire or a snowstorm or some other disaster, natural or not, that has happened near Reno. Used to drive me batty, but I also understand that they care about me and are a considerable distance away and getting thir info through the news, which sometimes tends to either make it sound worse than it is or gets it completely wrong!
So what your saying is that maybe CNN is not the best place to figure out if I need to crawl in a hole. lol
Oh good LORD! Tell her NOT to turn on CNN any time soon!!! She will think Russia is about to invade the STATE of Georgia! LMFAO! Such a great, comical post!
LOL that's too funny. I'm in another state and it seems my family knows more about our weather than WE do! :)
Too funny! I am one of those "Weather Warning Moms".
Yup! CNN and the Weather Channel---gotta make news out of something and everything :)!
Glad you had a smile in your heart while typing that one!
Sorry I'm late to your SITS party, but glad I came!
But the news is *always* true! And you don't mess with TORNADOS! I feel ya Momma! Ha ha...take cover...COVER, I TELL YOU!
Just kidding. It's just that I happen to be addicted to FOX (sorry CNN) and tend to freak out over stuff I see there.
Happy SITS Day!
Isn't it funny how people who aren't living where the storm is are always more freaked out than the ones in it's path? I don't know if it's over-sensitivity on their part or denial on mine. I blogged about a warning, and the comments were like a collective sigh of relief that we were still alive.
