Alex's new favorite phrase is "Why?" I know this is a good thing, but it is also one of the most confounding phrases ever. I try to patiently answer every little why until I hit the point of no return, and end it with "...because I said so."
We've been blessed with a very verbal, very precocious, very smart boy. He's curious. He's funny. He so damn cute it hurts a little bit to look at him. But this "Why" business might just send me over the edge. Every thing I say is met with "Why?" It's time to eat dinner. "Why?" You can't kick the dog. "Why?" It's time to take a bath. "Why?" Momma's going to scream. "Why?" Because you're driving me crazier. "Why?" Because your too cute and smart for your own good. "Why?" Because you are blessed with good genes. "Why?" Because God was really smiling on Mommy and Daddy when he gave you to us. "Why?" Because Because Because!!!
I actually really cherish this time, because I know it's going to be short. Soon enough he'll be a teenager and what he says then will certainly drive me more nuts than what he's saying now. So I'll just humor him and keep answering all those whys as best I can until my patience runs out.

We never had the "why" stage, but did go through the "What's gonna happen" stage
Wait until he hits the imaginative stage and starts telling you weird stories. Elizabeth is 2 1/2 and told me, "Daddy took my money and put it in the sky. You have to get it." Huh? Honey, I wish I could reach into the sky and grab money. Anyway, at least then you'll be entertained instead of irritated!
My usual response to this was "what do you think?" stopped them cold...made them think...my job was done :-)
My Alex is just as you described yours...adorable and maddening at the same time! He's the baby in our family, so he gets away with way more than the others did. Oh, and yeah, about getting older and mouthier....
Just wait.
