The Finish Line

(this post was actually written and posted on August 24... don't know why the date got screwy)

I made it across the finish line yesterday, but just barely. It wasn't too hot during the race, I'm guessing the temps were upper 70s to low 80s, but it was about 1000% humidity. I mean it was really oppressive. I made the first mile no problem, well, except for getting stuck behind a mob of walkers, when our lane was clearly marked "Runners Line Up Here." Just past the one mile mark, I realized I had to go to the bathroom. There were dozens of port-a-potties (gag) but they were all locked. I finally found one (which was totally gross) that was unlocked, thank goodness. I ran another mile, but then had to walk. The last mile I did intervals, but I ran across the finish line in 38:03. I beat my old time by about a minute and a half.

I definitely had the cutest cheering section! (At least he's smiling! I think this is the worst picture of me ever.) Alex really wanted to run with me. He actually cried when I took my place with the runners/walkers. But as I passed the Art Museum in the home stretch, he and Craig were there cheering for me!
After the race, we walked around on the lakefront for a bit. Got some snacks at the after-race party. We got free admission to Mexican Fiesta for taking part in the race and we had fun walking around. Alex got a souvenir and some food.
As you can see, a good time was had by all.

I'm a sucker for contests and there are some good ones going on amongst my bloggy friends right now. Tiffany from the R Family Diaries is having a 100th post giveaway.

Congrats on the 5K! I'm so wanting to do one. In fact I was up to running 28 minutes before I let it all go. And now I have to build it all back up again....

Great job on 38 minutes! I love how you got admission to the fiesta for running. Did you get any other cool swag for that race? I've heard that some races give you pretty cool stuff.

no swag other than the t-shirt and free admission. unless you count the "snacks" they gave out after the race. It was a fundraising race for the Make a Wish Foundation!

Thx for stopping by and your sweet comments! I, too, have had to change using mushrooms in things. It's funny how they can 'see things and then decide they don't like it after eating it for so many years, right?!? CONGRATS to you for your race time and record. That is AWESOME! And in 100% humidity~ you go girl!!! ~ Les

Again...I am just so in awe. As I sit here and eat another pistachio.

And that is most impressive that you beat your last time. Even with the time spent looking for an unlocked porta pottie...and actually using one!

That's awesome. I admire your determination. If I ever do a 5K it will be walking only ;-)

And you DID have the cutest cheering section! What a sweetie pie.

Congratulations on improving your time! That is always the best feeling. Plus, you beat your time with a bathroom break...so most impressive. Now...a 10k...

Also, do you like using Break the Tape...and does it automatically synch with Garmin?

Congratulations! I am so impressed, I could never do somethinglike that, I am so out of shape. Maybe it would be a good goal for next summer though.

In my book if you finish, you WIN!!! Congraulations...I know you must feel like a million dollars.

Aaahh! I'm surrounded on every ethernet-side by runners!! It's like the God of the blogosphere is sending me a message.

I'm hoping it's just "you should run" and not "you should run away..."

Ooh- weird. My word verification is iqxcbufq! What!? Don't you see?

"IQ" (my last post title) needs to be "X"-ed. "C" all the "BUF" people? Get a "Q" which rhymes with "clue"!!

::Bowing to God of Blogosphere:: "I will obeeeeeeyy... I must be inspiiird by these incredible peeeeopllllleee...."

Good job, Sydney! I admire that you were able to beat your previous time despite the heat and the bathroom break--think of what you could have done if the weather had cooperated!

Yay! Congratulations! I know I'm a little late in congratulating you...I'm late crossing the finish line. :)

Wow, taking a pee break and still beating your time--you are making progress!
